"Mille Lacs Lake is one of the most popular walleye and
perch fishing destinations in Minnesota. Anglers spent 2.8 million
hours fishing Mille Lacs Lake in 2000. Walleye catches in assessment
nets were about average in 2000, with many fish over 20 inches,
many young fish (age 0 and 1), but fewer than average walleye
from 15 to 20 inches.
The yellow perch population also appeared healthy based on 2000
sampling. Anglers experienced above average catches for both
northern pike and muskellunge. Anglers caught 23,000 pike in
2000, up from 15,000 in 1999. Pike numbers and sizes may be
increasing as a result of the protected slot regulation on Mille
Lacs Lake.
Muskellunge catch was also higher this year, up to 2,500 during
the 2000 season compared to 1,500 in 1999."
